Babylon Berlin will premiere its fifth and final season on September 10, 2026, with all eight episodes dropping on ARD's on-demand platform, according to The Hollywood Reporter. German linear channel Das Erste will then air the season in two four-episode binge blocks on September 19 and September 25, as confirmed by ARD's official press release published July 28.

The final arc picks up on February 1933, days after Adolf Hitler was appointed Reich Chancellor, and runs through March 5, 1933 — the elections that handed him absolute power. Volker Bruch and Liv Lisa Fries return as police detective Gereon Rath and assistant Charlotte Ritter. Series co-creators and showrunners Henk Handloegten, Achim von Borries, and Tom Tykwer are back to close out the story they began in 2017, when Babylon Berlin was billed as the most expensive non-English-language drama ever made.

The road to a fifth season was not smooth. Sky Deutschland, the pay-TV partner on earlier seasons, pulled out before the final run was commissioned, leaving ARD to proceed alone — a withdrawal The Hollywood Reporter documented in June 2023. When ARD formally announced the continuation in a June 2024 press release, it did so through a cooperation with X Filme Creative Pool and Beta Film. Actress Liv Lisa Fries had told Deadline in February 2024 that writing was under way but financing was still being finalised; the eight episodes were eventually shot in autumn 2024.

X Filme produced the final season together with ARD Degeto, WDR, SWR, HR, Radio Bremen, Beta Film, and RBB. Uwe Schott, Tom Tykwer, Stefan Arndt, and Michael Polle served as producers.

The finale will not be the end of the Babylon Berlin world. A video game is being developed by von Borries in collaboration with ARD gaming company SWR X Lab. A making-of documentary, directed by Christian Jakob with Handloegten's involvement, is in the works. An audio drama series set in the show's universe is also being produced as a spinoff.

For audiences outside Germany, Babylon Berlin has had a fractured streaming history. Netflix carried the first three seasons before dropping the show. MHz Choice picked up the US rights and premiered season 4 in 2024. No international home for the final season has been announced yet.

When it launched in 2017, Babylon Berlin arrived as a German-language period crime drama set in the Weimar Republic — the turbulent democratic period between the two world wars. Over four seasons it followed Rath, a traumatised detective navigating Berlin's police force, politics, and criminal underworld, alongside Fries's Charlotte Ritter, a resourceful police assistant from a working-class family. The show drew international audiences and became one of the most widely distributed non-English-language series of its era.

Now it heads into its final stretch covering roughly two weeks of history that sealed the fate of the Weimar Republic. For a crew of hundreds, a writers' room, and characters audiences have followed for nearly a decade, September 10 is the slot where the story ends.
