Ozlo unveiled Sleepbuds 2 on July 28, 2026, the first major hardware update to its sleep-focused earbuds since the original launched in late 2024. The new model is priced at $279, a 12 percent increase over the original TechCrunch.

Ozlo occupies an unusual position in the wearables market. The company was founded by former Bose engineers N.B. Patil, Brian Mulcahey, and Charlie Taylor, all of whom worked on Bose's Sleepbuds program. When Bose exited the sleep-earbud category, Ozlo acquired and licensed the underlying research and intellectual property. The original Sleepbuds have since drawn more than 200,000 customers and were named a 2025 CES Innovation Awards Honoree PR Newswire. Ozlo markets the product as "the world's smallest earbuds designed just for sleep" Ozlo.

The Sleepbuds line has always been defined by physical form factor constraints rather than raw audio performance. The original device was smaller and more low-profile than AirPods, targeting side sleepers for whom conventional earbuds are physically uncomfortable to lie on. Feature parity with general-purpose earbuds was never the goal. The original Sleepbuds offered built-in sleep sounds, Bluetooth streaming, passive noise blocking (meaning the ear tips physically block sound rather than using electronics to cancel it), an in-ear alarm, and sleep tracking.

Sleepbuds 2 iterate on that foundation across three areas: battery life, audio quality, and environmental sensing.

Battery life jumps from roughly 10 hours to 14 hours per charge. The charging case stores enough power for two to three nights of use and adds a physical button to play a sleep sound or snooze the alarm without reaching for a phone. A redesigned antenna and extender deliver longer Bluetooth range, a more reliable connection, and dedicated pairing controls.

On the audio side, the updated driver system includes a built-in amplifier intended to improve both sound masking and overall sound quality. Personalized sound tuning is new, with four modes: Spoken Word, Airplane, Focus, and Balanced. A feature called Sleep Shield blocks incoming calls, alerts, notifications, and Bluetooth audio streaming while active, though it only functions if the user has not already enabled their phone's native sleep focus mode.

The most substantive change is in sensing. Sleepbuds 2 carry biometric sensors in the earbuds themselves that monitor breathing and movement, while the charging case acts as an ambient environmental monitor, tracking room sound levels, light, and temperature. This splits the sensing workload between body and environment, an architectural choice that sets the product apart from wrist-worn sleep trackers, which must guess at environmental context from the wrist.

Ozlo has also outlined plans to become a broader platform for sleep data. The company did not detail specific API partnerships or third-party integrations, but the framing signals an intent to move beyond single-device hardware sales toward a model where the company aggregates sleep data from multiple sources. Whether that platform materializes as an open ecosystem or a closed loop within Ozlo's own app will determine how much leverage the company gains from the sensing architecture it has built into this generation of hardware.

Looking at the competitive landscape, sleep-specific wearables remain a narrow category. Apple, Google, and Samsung all capture sleep data through wrist-worn devices, but none ship a form factor optimized for in-ear use during sleep. The trade-off Ozlo is making is clear: sacrifice the general-purpose functionality of mainstream earbuds in exchange for a physical design and sensor suite purpose-built for a single use case. Whether 200,000 customers validates the category or defines its ceiling is a question this product generation may begin to answer.

In my view, the battery improvement matters more than it might appear. Ten hours was tight for anyone who sleeps long or uses the buds for wind-down before bed. Fourteen hours eliminates that edge case without requiring a mid-night swap. And the environmental sensing in the case is the feature most likely to differentiate Sleepbuds 2 from what a watch can do, because room-level data on sound, light, and temperature is the variable wrist-worn devices structurally cannot capture.

The $279 price point positions the product firmly in premium territory, above most mainstream wireless earbuds but below high-end hearing aids and specialized medical sleep devices. For a company that has shipped exactly one prior generation and is still establishing its brand independently of the Bose lineage, the price increase suggests confidence that the installed base will upgrade and that the expanded feature set justifies the premium.

The broader question is whether sleep data, as a category, becomes valuable enough to sustain a standalone hardware company. Ozlo is making an early bet that it will.
