Mubi will stream the Spanish series La Mesías exclusively across seven countries starting September 3, giving the streaming service — known for its curated arthouse catalogue — one of the most decorated Spanish-language series of recent years.

The deal, closed with Movistar Plus International, covers the UK, Canada, Turkey, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, and France, according to Variety. Mubi marked the announcement by sharing a new international trailer exclusively with the trade publication.

La Mesías is a six-part family-framed psychological mystery thriller created by Javier Ambrossi and Javier Calvo, the duo known across Spanish-language television as Los Javis. The series is a Movistar Plus Original, produced in collaboration with the pair's own label, Suma Content. Ambrossi and Calvo previously directed La bola negra, which won the best-director prize at Cannes, and their earlier series Veneno was picked up by HBO Max for the US market (Variety, 2023). Their credits also include Dressed in Blue (Variety, 2026).

The series launches on Mubi with a two-episode premiere. It follows a thirtysomething character named Enric (Variety, 2023), though the streaming platform has kept further plot detail under wraps in its release materials.

The show arrives with a strong festival record. It world-premiered at the San Sebastián Festival in 2023 and became the first Spanish series ever selected for the Sundance Festival. At Series Mania, it won a directing award and a Student Audience Award.

The scale of the production was considerable. Shooting ran for 25 weeks entirely on location, mostly across 30 rural sites outside Barcelona. The production featured 170 characters and 3,800 extras. Raül Refree — a producer who has worked with Rosalía — composed the original soundtrack.

The cast includes Roger Casamayor, Macarena García, Ana Rujas, Lola Dueñas, and Carmen Machi.

For viewers in the seven licensed territories, September 3 is the date the full series becomes available — starting with those first two episodes. Mubi's pick-up means the show reaches audiences well beyond its original Movistar Plus home in Spain, where it has already aired.
