Nineteen Minutes of Gears of War: E-Day Horde Siege Gameplay Released Ahead of August Beta

Nineteen minutes of direct-capture Horde Siege gameplay from Gears of War: E-Day went live on July 30, giving the fullest public look yet at the multiplayer mode heading into an August open beta (VGC).

The footage was recorded by VideoGamesChronicle staff during an Xbox-organised preview session — not taken from an official developer video. It shows the "Blitz" variation of Horde Siege, a shorter format with only a couple of objectives, played on the Golden Quarter map.

Horde Siege is what Xbox officially calls "a reimagination of Gears' iconic PvE mode" — PvE meaning player-versus-environment, where human players team up against computer-controlled enemies rather than each other (Xbox Wire). Twelve players split into three squads of four, each squad sharing the same map but working through its own separate objectives. Map-wide events called Boss Invasions occasionally pull all three squads together, forcing cooperation across the whole field.

The captured footage ran on a high-end PC build: an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090, AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D processor, and 64GB of DDR5 6000MHz RAM, set to the game's "Ludicrous" graphics preset. The video is hosted on VGC's YouTube channel.

For players who want to try the mode themselves, the route is an open beta. Pre-ordering Gears of War: E-Day unlocks early-access beta from August 6 to August 10. A second beta weekend, open to everyone, follows later in the summer. According to Xbox, the beta build contains the same content that journalists played at the preview session.

The beta offers a slice of the full package. Horde Siege includes one map — three are planned for launch — with a mode-specific level cap of 10 instead of 30, and two Invasion Bosses instead of four. Players' overall level, a separate progression track, is capped at 50 in the beta; the full game raises that to 100 with four "re-ups," the Gears series' term for prestige resets that let players start progression over for additional rewards.

Versus, the competitive player-versus-player side, is also in the beta with two modes and two maps. The full game ships with four Versus modes and six maps. Xbox confirmed Versus as 4v4 PvP through its French-language Xbox Wire coverage (Xbox Wire France).

Gears of War: E-Day launches on October 6, 2025 for Xbox Series X/S and PC, and is included on day one with Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. A Premium Edition grants five days of early access starting October 1. The official Gears of War website notes that online multiplayer features — including Horde Siege, Versus, and the open beta — may require a Game Pass subscription (Gears of War official site). The game also features online campaign co-op.

Xbox followed its June showcase coverage of Horde Siege with a July 14 Xbox Wire piece detailing how developer The Coalition is working with NVIDIA on the PC version, which also touched on the refined Versus PvP mode (Xbox Wire).

For fans of the series, the appeal is straightforward: Horde has been a Gears staple since 2008, and Horde Siege triples the player count while keeping the defend-and-survive loop intact. The beta will show whether the three-squad structure holds up under public load.
