Cyanide on Tomato Farms Killed 15 Elephants in Kenya. Here's Why It Matters.

Fifteen elephants died near Amboseli National Park in southern Kenya between June 24 and July 24, 2026, and the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has confirmed cyanide poisoning as the cause. Laboratory analysis of tissue samples from the carcasses found traces of the compound, KWS director general Erustus Kanga told Citizen TV, with results publicly reported on July 29. The finding points to agricultural pesticide contamination on tomato farms surrounding elephant habitat in the Kimana sanctuary and Kuku Group ranch areas.
Isaac Lekolool, head of veterinary and capture services at KWS, told Citizen TV that the stomach contents of one elephant from the herd that roamed the Kimana sanctuary included large quantities of tomatoes. The presence of cultivated produce in the digestive tract, combined with the cyanide detection in carcass samples, led investigators toward agrochemical poisoning rather than a natural pathogen or a deliberate poaching attempt. KWS had announced on July 28 that it was investigating the deaths and that 10 of the elephants had exhibited signs of partial paralysis before dying.
Kimana town is a leading tomato producer in the region. Researchers at the Route to Food Initiative had previously documented the use of a cyanide-based substance on crops there. Cyanide compounds, including calcium cyanide and sodium cyanide formulations, are used in some agricultural settings as soil fumigants — chemicals applied to soil to kill pests — and as pest-control agents. Their availability and application on farms adjacent to wildlife corridors creates an exposure pathway that does not require intent to harm elephants. Elephants raiding cultivated fields ingest treated produce directly, and the compound acts rapidly, interfering with cellular respiration (the process by which cells produce energy) and producing the paralysis symptoms KWS described.
The Amboseli ecosystem, encompassing the national park and neighboring conservancies, supports more than 1,600 elephants. The 15 deaths represent roughly one percent of that population, concentrated within a single month and a geographically limited area. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) described the deaths as "deeply alarming" in a statement. Benson Leyian, CEO of the Big Life Foundation, a conservation organization operating in the area surrounding Amboseli, has been involved in the local response. The Associated Press distributed a wire story datelined Nairobi reporting the suspected link between the deaths and cyanide-contaminated tomatoes from nearby farms.
The broader context here is the tension between intensive agriculture and wildlife conservation in Kenya's rangeland ecosystems. Amboseli's elephants move across an unfenced landscape that includes community-owned land, group ranches, and smallholder farms. As irrigated agriculture has expanded in historically pastoralist zones around Kimana and the broader Kuku area, the interface between crop production and migratory wildlife routes has narrowed. Think of it as two expanding footprints overlapping on the same map. Elephants follow centuries-old paths between dry-season water sources and wet-season dispersal areas, and those paths now intersect with cultivated fields. When those fields are treated with toxic agrochemicals, the consequence is non-selective: any animal that forages on the crop ingests the compound.
The Route to Food Initiative's prior documentation of cyanide use on Kimana-area tomato crops signals that the risk was recognized before these deaths. Whether regulatory action followed that documentation is not clear from the available reporting. The question now is whether Kenya's pesticide control framework, administered through the Pest Control Products Board, will move to restrict or ban cyanide-based agricultural products in zones adjacent to protected areas, or whether the response will remain at the level of individual incident investigation. KWS has investigative authority within national parks and reserves, but pesticide regulation and agricultural enforcement fall under separate mandates.
The cyanide pathway differs from the ivory-driven poaching crisis that has dominated Kenya's elephant conservation discourse for the past two decades. There is no indication that the elephants were deliberately targeted. The mortality mechanism is environmental: a toxic agricultural input entering a food chain that elephants access through crop-raiding, a behavior that is itself a consequence of habitat compression. Conservation organizations including IFAW and the Big Life Foundation have framed the event as a warning about the sustainability of current land-use patterns around Amboseli. The confirmed death toll, the rapidity of the poisoning, and the geographic concentration all suggest that even a modest expansion of chemical-intensive farming in wildlife dispersal areas could produce cascading mortality in a population that Kenya has spent decades rebuilding.
