Manhattan Theatre Club has added Micaela Diamond and Will Pullen to the cast of its upcoming Broadway revival of Clifford Odets' Awake and Sing!, the company announced on July 30. Diamond will play Hennie Berger, the family's young daughter; Pullen will play Ralph Berger, Hennie's younger brother. Deadline

The two join a cast already set with Danny Burstein, Jessica Hecht, and Jeremy Shamos, whose involvement was first reported in June. Burstein is a Tony Award winner; Hecht is a Tony and Emmy nominee. Tyne Rafaeli directs the production, which is part of MTC's 2026-27 season.

Previews — the preview period, when a show runs in front of audiences before its official opening night — begin Tuesday, December 15 at MTC's Samuel J. Friedman Theatre. Opening night is Thursday, January 7, 2027. Additional casting will be announced later.

The creative team includes scenic and costume design by David Zinn, lighting design by Isabella Byrd, and original music and sound design by Daniel Kluger. The revival is produced in association with Brian and Dayna Lee, and Nicole and Stephanie Kramer.

Diamond is a Tony and Grammy Award nominee for her performance as Lucille Frank in the Broadway revival of Parade. Pullen made his Broadway debut in Lynn Nottage's Sweat and starred as Jem in Aaron Sorkin's adaptation of To Kill a Mockingbird.

Awake and Sing! first premiered on Broadway in 1935, produced by the Group Theatre — the influential ensemble that shaped American dramatic realism in the 1930s. The play has returned to Broadway three times since: in 1939, 1984, and 2006. Odets' script follows the Berger family, Jewish immigrants in the Bronx, squeezed by poverty and generational conflict during the Depression.

For ticket buyers, the draw here is a familiar play with a stage full of names. Burstein's Tony came for The Drowsy Chaperone; he has been a Broadway presence for decades. Hecht's credits span Broadway and television. Diamond, still early in her career, earned her nominations in a revival that itself drew attention for its sold-out run. Pullen brings credentials from two of the last decade's high-profile straight plays.

MTC, one of Broadway's three nonprofit theater companies, operates the Friedman on West 47th Street. The company's productions are funded through subscriptions, donations, and grants rather than investor capital — a different financial model from commercial Broadway, where backers recoup, meaning the show pays back what it cost to open. A nonprofit like MTC measures success not by recoupment but by mission and audience reach.
