Spider-Man: Brand New Day Eyes a $465 Million Global Opening — and the Holland Era Has Been Building to This

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is tracking toward a $465 million global opening, according to The Hollywood Reporter — a figure that, if it holds, would sit among the largest theatrical debuts ever recorded.
The number carries weight because the Tom Holland Spider-Man films have grown at each step. Holland debuted as Peter Parker in Captain America: Civil War (2016), then led three solo Columbia Pictures releases — financed by Sony, with Marvel Studios acting as creative manager and handling integration into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe for crossover films.
The first solo outing, Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), grossed $880 million globally. Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) climbed to $1.1 billion. Then Spider-Man: No Way Home rocketed to $1.9 billion worldwide, having opened to $600.5 million globally — $327 million of that from international markets — with a $121.5 million domestic opening day (the second-best in box-office history) fuelled by $50 million in Thursday previews, Deadline reported. Domestic, in this context, means the United States and Canada.
All three Holland solo films scored above 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Behind the camera, the structure has been consistent. Former Sony boss Amy Pascal helped engineer the Marvel-Sony deal in 2015 and produces the solo films through her Pascal Pictures banner, acting as a bridge between the two studios. The writing team of Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers co-wrote Homecoming and are the sole credited writers on the subsequent three Holland solo films. Holland's appearances in crossover entries — Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame — were scripted by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.
The franchise around Holland's Spider-Man is only one branch of a much larger tree. The Spider-Man film franchise is the second highest-grossing franchise in cinema history, collectively grossing over $11 billion, per Wikipedia. Sony produced three Spider-Man-adjacent villain films — Madame Web, Morbius, and Kraven the Hunter. The two animated Spider-Verse films were both critical and commercial hits; Across the Spider-Verse, made for roughly $100 million against No Way Home's $200 million production budget, opened to about $120 million globally with a $51.7 million domestic opening day, Deadline reported.
The deal that brought Holland into the fold was announced by Sony on 9 February 2015, with the studio calling Spider-Man a "$4 billion franchise" at the time. By June of that year, Holland was cast. The rest is visible in the grosses: $880 million became $1.1 billion became $1.9 billion, each film out-earning the last.
A $465 million opening for Brand New Day would continue that trajectory — and would give Sony and Marvel their strongest Holland-era launch outside of No Way Home.
