Spider-Man: Brand New Day Swings Past Endgame With $360 Million Domestic Debut

Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened to $360 million in North American theatres, surpassing Avengers: Endgame's long-standing domestic opening record, according to Variety and CNBC. The figure covers the domestic market — the United States and Canada — and ranks as the largest domestic debut in box-office history. Globally, the Tom Holland-led film grossed $932 million in its opening frame, the second-largest worldwide debut ever, per Variety.
Brand New Day did not break the record alone. It shared the weekend with Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, and the two titles together powered the largest collective box-office weekend of all time, Variety reports. Two blockbusters arriving simultaneously, both drawing massive crowds, pushed total ticket sales across the industry past any previous three-day frame.
Tom Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures, called the summer 2026 season the best for the theatrical business since the pandemic, pointing to a string of hits — The Devil Wears Prada 2, Toy Story 5, Obsession, and Backrooms — as evidence that audiences are returning to cinemas in force, according to Variety. The results, he said, have restored Hollywood's confidence in theatrical moviegoing.
Rothman also addressed Sony's Spider-Man spinoffs, which have had a mixed track record. He attributed the commercial failures of Kraven the Hunter and Madame Web to audiences simply not being satisfied with them, while noting that the Venom trilogy was a big success, Variety reports. The lesson, in his telling: quality drives turnout, not the brand name alone.
As for whether Holland will don the suit again, Rothman left the door open. He said there is a possibility of another Spider-Man sequel starring Holland, though no deal has been announced.
For the industry, this weekend lands as a signal moment. The domestic opening record had stood since 2019, when Endgame arrived as the culmination of a decade of Marvel storytelling. Surpassing it with a solo character film — rather than an ensemble Avengers title — underscores how much draw Spider-Man carries on his own. And pairing a record-breaking superhero film with a Nolan epic in the same frame gave theatres their busiest collective weekend ever, a fact that distributors and exhibitors will note as they plan the 2027 calendar.
The film swung into theatres globally on 31 July 2026, per Sony's CinemaCon recap and a Sony Group blog post. Sony confirmed the title — Spider-Man: Brand New Day — at CinemaCon earlier this year. Holland reprises the role he has played across six Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances, a streak that began with 2016's Captain America: Civil War.
These opening figures are studio estimates reported for the weekend; Monday actuals may adjust them slightly.
