Kaley Cuoco Returns as a Guerrilla-Fighter Penny in Stuart Fails to Save the Universe

Kaley Cuoco shows up in the second episode of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe — but the Penny viewers meet is not the Cheesecake Factory server they remember from The Big Bang Theory. She is a guerrilla leader. The episode, titled "Spoiler: Zack's In This One," is streaming now on HBO Max, according to Variety.
Chuck Lorre, co-creator and executive producer of the spinoff, told Variety that the multiverse setup was part of the plan from the start. The idea was to let familiar characters recur with entirely different backstories — so a Penny who once served cheesecake can plausibly lead a resistance instead. Cuoco's cameo lands in that framework: same name, different universe, new function in the story.
The episode carries more than one returning face. Riki Lindhome appears as a Caltech receptionist. Christine Baranski turns up as herself, in a reprogramming video. Brian Thomas Smith reprises his role as Zack. People magazine had already flagged a surprise cameo in the series premiere a week earlier, without naming the actor (People). Cuoco herself had hinted at a possible return back in January, as reported by BleedingCool.
The spinoff centres on characters who orbited the edges of The Big Bang Theory. Kevin Sussman stars as Stuart, the comic-book-shop owner. John Ross Bowie plays Kripke, Brian Posehn is Bert, and Lauren Lapkus returns as Denise. The parent series ran on CBS from 2007 to 2019.
For fans of the original, the multiverse device means the door stays open for more familiar names to appear in radically different form. Lorre's framing makes that a structural choice rather than a one-off gimmick. Whether Cuoco returns again has not been confirmed. What is confirmed is that she is already here, and she is carrying a weapon.
