Melissa Rauch Returns as a 60-Foot Demon Bernadette in 'Stuart Fails to Save the Universe'

Melissa Rauch is back as Bernadette Rostenkowski — but not the microbiologist fans remember. In the third episode of HBO Max's Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, titled "Spoiler: Bert Is Magic," Rauch reprises her Big Bang Theory role as a wizard-demon who transforms into a 60-foot monster and tears through Pasadena. The episode is now streaming on HBO Max (Variety).

The series, which Collider has described as a "mind-bending multiverse sci-fi saga" built around The Big Bang Theory's most overlooked characters, leans hard into its alternate-universe premise. Series creator Chuck Lorre personally pitched the show to Rauch, telling her she would play a very different version of Bernadette. Rauch also performed motion capture for the giant Bernadette, something she told Variety she had never done before (Variety).

Kevin Sussman leads the cast as Stuart, with Lauren Lapkus returning as Denise. Brian Posehn's Bert gets the episode's title-making reveal: he is a wizard, capable of summoning rain and turning Coke into Diet Coke. John Ross Bowie's Kripke ends up on the wrong end of Bert's magic when he is turned into a penguin (Variety).

The alternate universe comes with its own comic book store, rebranded "The Wizard's Sleeve," and a labour-relations gag: a "Wizards Guild of America" is on strike, and Bernadette is accused of using her powers while the guild is walking the picket line. Wil Wheaton appears as a wizard who warns Stuart not to trust Bernadette. Louis Mustillo plays a demon named Alexa (Variety).

For fans of The Big Bang Theory, the episode packs familiar faces into a completely unfamiliar setting — the sitcom's supporting cast recast as wizards, demons and a 60-foot menace stomping across their old California suburb.
