The weekend around 2 August 2026 delivered the biggest collective box office weekend in history, with roughly $430 million spent across all films in the marketplace, surpassing the previous record of $402 million set by the opening of Avengers: Endgame in 2019 (Variety).

Two films drove the surge. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the fourth Spider-Man adventure starring Tom Holland, opened with $355 million in its domestic debut — the United States and Canada — ranking as the second-biggest opening of all time and only the second movie in history to cross $300 million in a single weekend. The all-time opening record of $357 million still belongs to Avengers: Endgame (Variety).

Sony and Marvel had expected something closer to $270 million for the debut (CNBC). Some pre-release estimates had ranged as high as $300 million (Barron's). The film cleared all of them.

Brand New Day also posted the largest preview haul on record at $72 million and the biggest opening day ever at $168 million. It carries a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 'A' grade on CinemaScore exit polls. It is the follow-up to 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, which opened to $260 million and finished its run at $1.9 billion worldwide (Variety).

Christopher Nolan's Greek epic The Odyssey held strong in its third frame, adding $51 million to the record total. The film has generated $911 million worldwide after less than a month in theatres (Variety). Holdovers including Disney's Toy Story 5 and Moana and Universal's Minion & Monsters rounded out the weekend.

Paul Dergarabedian, Rentrak's head of marketplace trends, noted that this was only the second $400 million-plus weekend in box office history. Michael O'Leary, president and CEO of Cinema United, praised the achievement. David A. Gross, who publishes the box office newsletter FranchiseRe, also commented on the record (Variety).

Before this weekend, the top three collective box office weekends had been led by Avengers: Endgame ($402 million), Avengers: Infinity War ($314 million) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($313 million). All three were single-title openings. This record was shared.

Tom Holland and Zendaya, who star in both Brand New Day and The Odyssey, were recently married. Two of the biggest films on the planet, released weeks apart, each led by the same couple — a fact the audience numbers make hard to ignore.

What makes this weekend stand out is the breadth. Previous record weekends rested on one film carrying the market. This one had a $355 million opener, a $51 million holdover, and a stack of family titles still drawing crowds — all at once. The previous benchmark, $402 million, had stood for seven years. It fell by $28 million.
