Spider-Man: Brand New Day Breaks Domestic Opening Record as Russo Brothers Pass the Torch

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has opened to $360 million at the US box office, breaking the domestic opening weekend record — a title the Russo brothers held for more than seven years. Joe and Anthony Russo took to Instagram to formally surrender the crown, writing: "The gauntlet has been passed…" (Deadline, Variety).
Their previous record-holder, Avengers: Endgame, opened in April 2019 to $357.1 million — a number that stood as the benchmark for the biggest three-day launch in North American box office history. Brand New Day, a Sony Pictures release, edged past it by roughly $2.9 million. (Domestic, in box-office terms, covers the United States and Canada.)
The Russos' Instagram post congratulated director Destin Daniel Cretton and a sprawling cast led by Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Sadie Sink, Florence Pugh, Michael Mando, and Marisa Tomei. Producers Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Rachel O'Connor were also named, along with the full cast and crew.
The handoff carries a certain symmetry. The Russos directed four films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including the two Avengers climaxes that bookended the Infinity Saga. Now they are preparing their return to that world with Avengers: Doomsday, which premieres after Brand New Day and opens December 18, with Marvel superheroes assembling to fight Doctor Doom.
Doomsday's cast reads like an MCU all-star roll call: Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Vanessa Kirby, Pedro Pascal, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Tenoch Huerta, Simu Liu, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Kelsey Grammer. Pugh appears in both the Spider-Man and Avengers line-ups, bridging the two releases.
At Disney's most recent quarterly earnings call, CEO Josh D'Amaro congratulated the teams at Sony and Marvel Studios on Brand New Day's opening and said the result "bodes well" for the upcoming Avengers film.
For Marvel, a record-breaking Spider-Man opening clears a runway. Brand New Day arrives between major phases of the studio's release calendar, and its performance signals audience appetite for the interconnected storytelling that Doomsday will lean into. For Sony, which holds the film rights to the Spider-Man character, a $360 million domestic launch is the strongest argument yet for the continued partnership with Marvel Studios that keeps Holland's Peter Parker inside the MCU.
