Mary Holland has been cast as the female lead, Sandra, in DC Crime, the Jimmy Olsen Superman spinoff series heading to HBO Max, according to Deadline.

HBO Max and DC Studios both declined to comment on the casting.

The series is built around Jimmy Olsen — played by Skyler Gisondo, who reprises his role from James Gunn's Superman film — but with a twist: it is structured as a true-crime docuseries, or mockumentary, with Jimmy hosting. Season 1 will centre on Gorilla Grodd, the telepathic DC supervillain who gains psychic powers and other abilities after an encounter with an alien spacecraft.

Jimmy Tatro was previously announced to play Grodd, a casting Deadline confirmed in July 2026. Grodd was created in 1959 by John Broome and Carmine Infantio and was most recently seen on screen as part of DC's Arrowverse — the interconnected television franchise built around Arrow, The Flash and related series.

Behind the camera, DC Crime comes from Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, the creators of Netflix's American Vandal, who will write, executive produce and showrun the series. DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran are executive producers. Galen Vaisman is overseeing production, and Warner Bros. Television is also producing.

Holland is an actress, writer and comedian who currently recurs on CBS's Ghosts and Netflix's The Little House on the Prairie reboot. Her previous credits include Apple TV+'s The Big Door Prize and the films Under the Lights, Nightbitch, Self Reliance, Woman in the House, and Senior Year. She is now in production on The Earliest Show, a TV series from Amplify Pictures.

Holland is represented by Atlas Artists, Paradigm Talent Agency, and Ziffren Brittenham.

What makes this project stand out is the creative lineage. Yacenda and Perrault built American Vandal — a deadpan, mockumentary-style mystery that satirised true-crime documentaries — into a cult hit for Netflix. Bringing that sensibility into the DC Universe, with a character as outwardly absurd as a psychic gorilla, suggests the show will lean into satire rather than conventional superhero storytelling. Gunn's Superman film, released as the launch title for DC Studios' rebooted film slate, introduced Gisondo's Jimmy Olsen in a supporting role.
