Naomi Watts has revealed she voices E.V., Peter Parker's artificial intelligence assistant, in Spider-Man: Brand New Day — announcing the role via Instagram as the film smashed box-office records on its opening weekend.

Watts shared a photo of herself recording lines remotely with director Destin Daniel Cretton, captioning it: "From playing your mom to playing your AI (100% human made)." The caption also congratulated Cretton, star Tom Holland, and the wider team on what she called a historic debut. The official Spider-Man: Brand New Day account confirmed her casting separately on August 4 Variety.

The film, produced by Sony and Marvel Studios, grossed an estimated $932 million worldwide in its opening frame — the second-biggest global debut on record, behind only Avengers: Endgame Forbes. Domestically — the United States and Canada — it pulled in $360 million, edging past Endgame's previous record of $357.1 million Variety. By its sixth day, the film had crossed $1 billion globally, making it the second-fastest picture in history to reach that milestone Variety. The casting reunites Watts and Holland fourteen years after they co-starred in The Impossible (2012), a dramatisation of one family's separation during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami Variety. Watts earned an Oscar nomination for best actress for the role. For Holland, the film was his live-action feature debut — he landed the part of Peter Parker three years later.

Holland has spoken warmly about their time together. On Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast, he called Watts the first person to teach him how to conduct himself on a film set, saying he was able to watch a professional at the top of her game and learn from her directly Variety.

Watts also has a prior creative link to Cretton: she starred in his 2017 drama The Glass Castle, alongside Sadie Sink and Brie Larson Variety.

For fans of the franchise, the reveal adds one more thread to a film already breaking records — and gives Watts, the on-screen mother from Holland's very first film, a new kind of role in his orbit, this time as a voice inside Peter Parker's suit.
