A six-episode drama about the Indian Air Force's role in the 1999 Kargil War lands on Netflix on 7 August 2026, backed by a premiere at New Delhi's Bharat Mandapam and a speech from Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos.

The series is titled Operation Safed Sagar. It tells the story of the Golden Arrows — the 17th Squadron of the Indian Air Force — which was initially tasked with photo reconnaissance during the high-altitude conflict before being drawn into full combat operations. Netflix first unveiled the project at the inaugural Sekhon Indian Air Force event on 1 November 2025 and placed it on its "What's Next on Netflix India 2026" slate in February. The official trailer dropped on 19 July. Netflix's Tudum page describes the series as chronicling the Kargil mission as "the untold saga of courage, grit, and sacrifice."

The series was created and showrun by Abhijeet Singh Parmar and Kushal Srivastava, with Oni Sen directing. Matchbox Shots LLP and Feel Good Films produced. Co-creator Srivastava served in the Indian Air Force for six years after the Kargil War, giving the project a direct military lineage.

The cast spans established names and newer faces. Siddharth leads alongside Jimmy Shergill, Abhay Verma, Dia Mirza, Prajakta Koli, Adil Hussain, Mihir Ahuja, Taaruk Raina, Arnav Bhasin and Amrita Bagchi. The score is a multi-composer effort: Amit Trivedi, Vishal Dadlani, Supinwal Singh and Anurag Saikya.

One detail from the premiere grounds the series in personal history. Alka Ahuja, widow of Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja — who was killed during the Kargil War — entrusted the production with her husband's original wing badge. Actor Siddharth wears it on screen.

At the Delhi premiere, Sarandos said the production contributed more than $24 million to the Indian economy, with visual effects and creative-technology work accounting for more than $5 million of that total. The figures, reported by Variety, point to the scale of local production and post-production involvement on the series.

Netflix lists Operation Safed Sagar as a TV-MA drama on its title page. The German release listing carries it under the subtitle "The Untold Story of the Kargil War," while the main Tudum new-releases page lists it as "The Highest Air Force Mission."

The 7 August streaming release follows the 6 August premiere event at Bharat Mandapam, the convention centre in New Delhi that hosted the G20 summit in 2023. Sarandos's presence at the premiere signals the platform's investment in the Indian market and its growing slate of locally produced drama.

For viewers, the series offers a dramatised account of a military operation that has been widely covered in Indian public memory but, according to Netflix's own framing, has not been told from this specific squadron-level vantage point on screen. Whether it finds an audience beyond India is a question the viewing figures will answer once it goes live.
