Russell Crowe and Priyanka Chopra Jonas will star in Bluefly, a sci-fi action thriller that heads into production on Australia's Gold Coast later in 2026, Deadline reported on 6 August.

Nimród Antal, whose credits include Predators (2010), is directing from a screenplay by David Frigerio (Beast), William Eubank (Underwater) and Carlyle Eubank (Muzzle). The story is set in the Congo, where a grieving United Nations translator is pulled onto a black-ops mission to recover a downed aircraft that is not supposed to exist.

Highland Film Group is handling worldwide rights — the arrangement by which a sales company licenses a film's distribution rights territory by territory to international buyers — and will launch sales at the Toronto International Film Festival market this September. TIFF's market (the industry sidebar where films in development are pitched to distributors) has long been a launchpad for titles heading into production, and Bluefly will be shopping its two leads to buyers there.

The producing team spans five companies. Michael Jefferson produces for Polite Society, David Frigerio for Broken Open Pictures, Deborah Glover for G2 Dispatch, Arianne Fraser and Delphine Perrier for Highland Film Group, and Vanessa Yao Guo. Executive producers are Lia Buman, Guy Davies, RuthAnne Frigerio, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Jason Kringstein, Katie Leary, Scott Levenson and James Norbury.

Fraser, Highland's CEO, praised the pairing of Crowe and Chopra Jonas. COO Delphine Perrier called the film "heart-pounding entertainment" with a complex story full of unexpected twists. Antal described it as an intense, character-driven thriller wrapped inside a bold science-fiction premise.

Both leads arrive with busy slates. Crowe recently starred in Sony Pictures Classics' Nuremberg and has a packed forward calendar: Netflix's Unabomber, Vertical's The Weight, Walden Media's Billion Dollar Spy, and Amazon MGM's Highlander reboot. Chopra Jonas recently led and produced Prime Video's The Bluff and Heads of State. She is set to star in S.S. Rajamouli's Varanasi, due in March 2027, and opposite Orlando Bloom in the survival thriller Reset.

For audiences, the draw is straightforward: a genre picture with two globe-spanning names, a director who has handled ensemble action before, and a market premiere at one of the year's biggest industry gatherings. Where Bluefly lands with distributors — and when it reaches cinemas — will depend on what deals come out of Toronto.
