Ella Langley's "Choosin' Texas" has spent a 16th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the chart that ranks the biggest songs in the US across streaming, radio and sales — on the chart dated August 8. The same chart delivers a first: every song in the Hot 100's top five is country, with Langley also holding No. 4 through her Morgan Wallen duet "I Can't Love You Anymore" (Billboard).

"Choosin' Texas" first reached the summit on the chart dated March 7. Since then, it has been bumped from No. 1 by a string of major releases — Bad Bunny's "DtMF," Taylor Swift's "Opalite" and "I Knew It, I Knew You," Bruno Mars' "I Just Might," BTS' "Swim," Olivia Rodrigo's "Drop Dead," Drake's "Janice STFU" and Ariana Grande's "Hate That You Love Me." None of them held Langley off for more than two consecutive weeks at a time, according to Billboard.

The song's staying power has been building for months. It notched a 14th week at No. 1 on the chart dated July 20 and a 15th on July 27, each time surpassing further chart records, as tracked by Billboard. It also reached No. 1 on Australia's ARIA chart after 19 weeks on that listing, per Billboard.

Meanwhile, Ariana Grande released her eighth studio album, Petal, on Friday, July 31 — while in the middle of an arena tour largely supporting her previous album, 2024's Eternal Sunshine. Petal seemed all but assured a No. 1 debut on the Billboard 200, the album chart that blends sales and streaming equivalent album units (the measure that converts plays into album sales). That would make it Grande's seventh album to top that chart, as reported by Billboard.

Grande's advance single "Hate That You Love Me" debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 dated June 13 and spent its first two months in the top 10, sliding 5-8 on the August 8 chart. Following Petal's release, the single returned to the top three on Apple Music's real-time chart and Spotify's Daily Top Songs USA listing (Billboard). The title track "Petal" was tabbed as the album's second single and arrived with a new music video on July 31.

Grande has a history of simultaneous dominance across both charts. When Eternal Sunshine debuted atop the Billboard 200 in March 2024, its single "We Can't Be Friends (Wait for Your Love)" reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 the same week. In February 2019, when Thank U, Next opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, Grande held the top three spots on the Hot 100 simultaneously — led by "7 Rings" in its fourth week at No. 1 — becoming the first solo artist to accomplish that feat (Billboard).

What makes the August 8 chart unusual is the collision of those two stories. A pop star with a proven pattern of locking down both charts at once has just dropped a new album and a new single — and the No. 1 song in the country still belongs to a country artist who has not let go since March.
