Perez Hilton's family evacuated his children from his Miami home on the evening of 4 August, after the celebrity blogger appeared to self-harm during a TikTok livestream.

Hilton, 48, was broadcasting live on TikTok when viewers saw him covered in blood and cutting himself with a knife. Those watching contacted police, who responded to a possible suicide attempt at his Florida home later that night, Variety reported. He was subsequently hospitalised.

TikTok's automated moderation system flagged the stream after several minutes and shut it down after roughly 15 minutes, a TikTok spokesperson told People, according to Variety. Hilton's TikTok account has since been banned from the platform.

His children, his sister, and his niece were inside the home minutes before the livestream began, the family said in a statement released on Thursday, 6 August. They fled to protect the children from further trauma once it became clear Hilton was experiencing a severe mental health crisis and harming himself, Variety reported. The statement was also published on Hilton's own blog, perezhilton.com.

The family asked media, paparazzi, content creators, and the public to leave the area surrounding the family's home to give the children privacy and space.

On 5 August, while Hilton was hospitalised, his family and team said he was "receiving medical care," NBC News reported. In a statement published that day, the family wrote: "He is able to communicate, which has given our family hope."

Hilton remained under medical care as of 6 August, according to The Guardian. The family has not disclosed further details about his condition or treatment.

The incident has drawn attention to TikTok's livestream moderation. The platform relies on automated systems to detect content that violates its rules, including self-harm, but the stream was live for around 15 minutes before it was taken down. TikTok has not commented beyond the spokesperson's statement to People.

Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira Jr., rose to prominence in the 2000s with his celebrity gossip blog and has remained active across social media platforms, including TikTok, where he built a following with live commentary and gossip segments.
