Comedian Carrot Top is hospitalised and recovering after a reported suicide attempt on Friday, Sept. 18.
Representatives for the 61-year-old, whose real name is Scott Thompson, confirmed on Saturday, Sept. 19 that he was in hospital and receiving care. The update followed an initial report from TMZ that he had been taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Representative Jami Schlicher said Thompson was getting the care and support he needs. Schlicher said his family and those closest to him were grateful for concern and prayers and asked for privacy at this time. Schlicher did not give details about what led to the hospitalisation, according to Billboard.
The same update was shared with several news organisations on Saturday. The representative told NBC News that Thompson was recovering in hospital. The same message was given to TheWrap. USA Today reported that Scott “Carrot Top” Thompson was recovering in a Las Vegas hospital as of Sept. 18.
TMZ first reported on Sept. 18 that Thompson had been hospitalised after a suicide attempt. That reporting was the basis for wider coverage of the incident. No cause has been disclosed by his team.
Police were later seen arriving at his Las Vegas home, according to a follow-up report from TMZ. No further details about that response have been made public. Officials have not released additional information.
The hospitalisation led to the cancellation of his residency shows at the Atrium Showroom at Luxor Hotel & Casino on Friday and Saturday. The show scheduled for Saturday, September 19 was listed as cancelled. Audiences holding tickets for the weekend dates were affected with little notice.
His Las Vegas residency is long running. It began in November 2005 at Luxor. His current contract with the venue extends through 2030.
Thompson first appeared on the television talent show Star Search in 1991. He went on to build a career around high-energy prop comedy and his bright-red hair. He has since become a regular presence on the Las Vegas Strip.
He is next scheduled to perform on Monday, Sept. 21. Ticket sales for that performance remained open as of Sept. 19, according to local listings. No update has been given on whether that date will go ahead.
