That image — borrowed from a stage show where dancers formed a peacock's wings — became the backbone of the climactic fight in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the upcoming Marvel film directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Tom Holland. Stunt designer Peng Zhang was tasked with keeping the action "grounded in a metaphorical sense," and the metaphor he landed on connects directly to Jean Grey, the mutant powerhouse making her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut played by Sadie Sink Variety.

In the scene, the central ninja represents the head of the Phoenix — the cosmic force tied to Jean Grey in the comic-book source material — while the ninjas flanking it form the wings. Twenty performers, one unified movement, all channelling the essence of a character whose power can unravel planets. Zhang drew on Grey's comic-book ties to the Phoenix and wove them into the choreography itself, according to Variety's report on 8 August 2026.

The fight pits Spider-Man, wielding what the production calls "alien technology," against The Hand — a mystical clan of ninja assassins brought into the film at Cretton's suggestion — who fight with traditional martial arts. The sequence was shot on location at Dorchester Prison in Dorset, England, a working Victorian jail whose concrete walls and iron bars created a logistical puzzle. Rigging teams could not see the performers from their positions, so cameras were installed throughout the prison so they could monitor the action in real time. Wirework — the system of cables that lets performers fly, spin and land safely — had to be routed around the prison's bars and buildings Variety.

The stakes in the scene are clear even without a frame of footage. Jean Grey has been captured and detained by the Department of Damage Control, the government agency that cleans up superhuman messes in the Marvel universe. The DODC has also taken Grey's sister Sara, played by Olivia Booth-Ford. Holland's Spider-Man races to rescue Grey and stop her from taking revenge on DODC director William "Bill" Metzger, played by Tramell Tillman. The film's rogues' gallery extends further: The Scorpion (Michael Mando) and Tombstone (Marvin Jones) also appear, and the Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, factors into the climax — in a pivotal moment, Spider-Man pushes Grey out of the path of a bullet and is himself shot, devastating the Punisher Variety; Variety, 30 July 2026.

Cretton has also revealed that a massive fight scene featuring several classic villains was cut from the final film, suggesting the version reaching cinemas is a trimmed-down edit of something larger Instagram.
