Russian forces killed at least 17 people and wounded more than 40 in an overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv on 5 August 2026. Ukraine's military shot down 98 of 115 drones but failed to stop any of the missiles, according to The Guardian.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that "ballistic missile interceptors could have saved the lives of those killed" in the attack. He blamed partner nations for delays or failures in delivering the weapons Ukraine needs. Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko warned that people may still be trapped under rubble.

A ballistic missile is a fast, powerful weapon that flies high into the sky and then drops down on its target at enormous speed. To stop one, defenders fire an interceptor — a missile designed to catch and destroy the incoming missile in midair. Ukraine uses a system called the Patriot, supplied by the United States, for this job. But Ukraine has run out of the interceptor missiles the Patriot system needs to fire.

The attack fits a pattern that has been getting worse. On 31 July 2026, a Russian missile strike on Kyiv saw Ukraine intercept only one missile, because, Zelenskyy said, there are no interceptors for the Patriot system (Reuters). On 2 July 2026, Russia launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles at Kyiv, killing at least 21 and wounding more than 90 (Reuters). Zelenskyy said Kyiv and the surrounding region were the main target in the 5 August attack, and that Russia had spent several days stockpiling missiles in preparation.

Ukraine has warned for months about its shortage of interceptor missiles. The gap widened after US President Donald Trump backtracked on his promise to allow Ukraine to manufacture Patriot missiles on its own soil. Zelenskyy has repeatedly asked for anti-ballistic weapons and said Ukraine is working toward building its own air defense systems, but no such production exists at a useful scale yet.

Zelenskyy also called for new sanctions from the G7 and the European Union. Sanctions are penalties that governments use to restrict trade and financial activity with a target country, making it harder for that country to keep producing weapons or funding its military. He noted that a significant share of Russia's ballistic missile production is not covered by any sanctions. His argument is simple: if Russia's missile supply chain is not constrained and Ukraine cannot stop the missiles that reach it, the death toll will keep rising.

The trend is clear in the numbers. On 11 March 2025, Ukraine's air force shot down a Russian ballistic missile along with 79 drones, while 35 additional drones failed to reach their targets (Reuters). At that point, Ukraine could still intercept ballistic missiles. By late July 2026, it was intercepting one. On 5 August, it intercepted none.

The problem is not that Ukraine's defense systems are broken. It is that they have no ammunition to fire — a supply shortage that cannot be fixed by changing tactics.

The broader context here is a shift in how Russia is attacking. Russia sends large swarms of drones, which Ukraine can mostly shoot down, to overwhelm its radar and command systems. Then Russia fires the ballistic missiles that do the real damage, knowing Ukraine cannot currently stop them. So the fact that Ukraine shot down 98 of 115 drones looks like a success — but it becomes far less meaningful when every missile gets through afterward.

Zelenskyy made this point after a separate strike on the town of Radushne on 30 July: what matters most is not sympathy and condemnation but air defense missiles and pressure on Russia (president.gov.ua). The 5 August attack on Kyiv is the latest and deadliest example of that argument.

At the same time, an extreme heatwave gripped central Europe. The Czech city of Plzeň recorded an all-time high of 41.5°C on 4 August 2026, and Bratislava hit an August record of 40.8°C. On 5 August, Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Serbia, Slovakia, and Slovenia were forecast to see temperatures in the high 30s and possibly low 40s Celsius. The heatwave puts extra strain on infrastructure across the region, making it harder to coordinate emergency response and military logistics in an already tense and volatile environment.
