Europe is going through a record-breaking hot and dry summer in 2026. Wildfires are spreading from France to Greece. Hungary has had to cut back on electricity use. And national temperature records are being broken across the continent. Reuters reported on August 5 that Albania sent firefighters to battle blazes as southern and eastern Europe felt the worst of the latest heatwave. Austria hit a new national temperature record in early August, and Hungary limited power consumption because of the heat.

The effects have built up over weeks. In July, Reuters reported that repeated heatwaves had dried out plants across much of the continent, leading to water shortages, crop damage, wildfires, and thousands of extra deaths. By early August, France 24 described water-dropping planes fighting a major wildfire in Greece. The Detroit News documented the damage across central and southern Europe the week of August 5.

This summer's crisis follows a longer warming trend. The World Meteorological Organization reported that the average temperature over European land in June 2026 reached 20.74°C, the second-highest ever for that month (WMO). Reuters, using European climate data, has called Europe the world's fastest-warming continent.

National records tell the same story. The Czech Republic's weather service recorded 41.9°C on June 28, 2026, beating the country's previous July record of 40.2°C from 1983 and its August record of 40.4°C (CHMI). That is unusual because in Central Europe, the hottest temperatures usually come in July or August, not June. Weather measurements at Prague's Clementinum observatory, some of the oldest continuous temperature records in Europe, started in 1752 (CHMI). That gives Czech temperature data a history going back more than 270 years.

The Czech data also show that 2024 was the warmest year in the country's recorded history since 1961, with an average temperature of 10.3°C, which is 2.0°C above the 1991–2020 normal (CHMI). In Poland, the average temperature in December 2025 was 2.3°C, also 2.0°C above the long-term average, according to IMGW. In July 2025, the biggest temperature jumps in Europe were over Scandinavia, where northern areas saw up to 15 days above 30°C (IMGW). That kind of heat is historically rare that far north.

Poland's weather service expects the warming to continue. An IMGW-PIB long-term forecast says the average temperature in Poland in August 2026 will most likely be above the 1991–2020 normal.

The WMO has confirmed that the highest temperature ever officially recorded in Europe is 48.8°C, measured in Italy (IMGW Obserwator). No reading from this summer has been verified above that mark. But the sheer size of the area affected and how long the heat has lasted make this summer stand out from previous heatwaves.

The broader context here is that Europe is facing climate stress that builds on itself across the whole continent. When temperature records fall at the same time in Central Europe, the Mediterranean, and Scandinavia, that points to a warming trend affecting the whole system, not just isolated weather events. The practical effects are already showing up. Hungary's power cuts are a sign that electricity grids are struggling under the demand for air conditioning. Crop damage and water shortages reported by Reuters could affect food supplies well beyond the fire season. For governments and planners, the summer of 2026 makes a strong case for building power systems and wildfire response teams that can handle a hotter new normal. The centuries of data from places like Prague's Clementinum give these comparisons real historical weight. But the signal from forecasts and real-time grid strain is clear: the window for preparing for extreme heat in Europe is getting shorter.
