Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic Join Apple TV+ Monsterverse Series Led by Wyatt Russell
Connie Nielsen and Stana Katic have joined the cast of Legendary's Monsterverse series for Apple TV+, led by Wyatt Russell. Deadline reported the casting on 10 August 2026. Who they play is being kept under wraps.
The series follows Colonel Lee Shaw, an American operative played by Russell, who in 1984 went on a secret mission behind enemy lines to stop the Soviets from unleashing a Titan — the giant creatures at the centre of Legendary's Monsterverse franchise. Lee Shaw is a character audiences already know: he originated in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Apple TV+'s first Monsterverse series, where Kurt Russell played the older version and Wyatt Russell the younger one.
Nielsen and Katic join a cast that already includes Millie Brady, Pilou Asbaek, Corey Stoll, Ralph Ineson and Nyasha Hatendi. The showrunner is Joby Harold, whose credits include the Apple TV+ series Black Bird.
The Monsterverse started on the big screen with 2014's Godzilla and grew through Kong: Skull Island (2017), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. A new film, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, is scheduled for release in 2027. On the television side, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is heading into its second season, with both Kurt and Wyatt Russell returning as Lee Shaw, Legendary confirmed in November 2025.
Apple first renewed Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and confirmed the spinoff series in April 2024, Legendary announced at the time. The new untitled series is a separate show from Monarch, not a direct second season, though it builds on the same world and at least one shared character.
Behind the camera, the executive producing team is extensive. Harold and Tory Tunnell produce through their Safehouse Pictures banner, alongside Wyatt Russell, Chris Black, Kyle Bradstreet, Alex Boden, Dillard, Andy Goddard and James Skotchdopoloe. Hiro Matsuoka and Takemasa Arita executive produce on behalf of Toho Co., Ltd., which owns the Godzilla character — a reminder that the franchise's rights are shared between Legendary and the Japanese studio that created him.
Nielsen is known for roles in Gladiator and Wonder Woman. Katic starred for eight seasons as Detective Kate Beckett on Castle. Nielsen is represented by UTA, Untitled Entertainment and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols. Katic is repped by The Gersh Agency, Principal Entertainment and Nelson Davis Law.
No release date or episode count for the new series has been announced.
