She went on to reprise the character across the Marvel street-level series Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and The Defenders. Dawson said she learned the news from an email — a notification she summarised, with characteristic dryness, as "Yeah, nah." She told her mother, who had a practical grievance: "That sucks. Now I can't post the pictures," referring to behind-the-scenes photos she had been holding back.
The personal connection to Spider-Man runs deeper than a single film. Dawson's uncle is a comic book artist, and Spider-Man was the first character he learned to draw. She also noted that a recent comic features a young Spider-Man talking to Daredevil, with the young Peter Parker attending PS19 on the Lower East Side — the same elementary school Dawson herself attended.
Dawson said she hopes to one day play Claire Temple again, pointing out that her character exists in the same universe as Spider-Man.
The film she missed out on is, by any measure, a juggernaut. Spider-Man: Brand New Day — the fourth Spider-Man film led by Tom Holland — has grossed over $1.6 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of the year so far.
