Six more join Hulu's Prison Break reboot as Sam Trammell, Kerry Bishé and Robin Weigert take recurring roles
Six more actors have signed on for recurring roles in Hulu's Prison Break reboot, according to Deadline. Sam Trammell, Sean Bridgers, Chris Coy, Kerry Bishé, Robin Weigert and Jean Louisa Kelly round out a cast that already includes eight previously announced series regulars.
The reboot comes from Elgin James, who serves as showrunner, executive producer and director of the pilot — the first episode, which sets the tone for the series. 20th Television is the studio behind it. Hulu first ordered a pilot in December 2024, then handed the project a full series order in October 2025, meaning the show was greenlit straight through without needing further pilot evaluation.
The new Prison Break follows an ex-soldier turned corrections officer who takes a job at one of the deadliest prisons in America. It is a new story rather than a direct continuation of the 2005–2017 original, which ran on Fox across five seasons.
The previously announced cast includes Emily Browning (Cassidy), Drake Rodger (Tommy), Lukas Gage (Jackson), Clayton Cardenas (Michael 'Ghost'), JR Bourne (Junior), Georgie Flores (Andrea), Kelli Berglund (Cheyenne) and Myles Bullock (Darius 'Red').
Among the newly added recurring players, each takes on a distinct role inside and around the prison. Sam Trammell plays Jarrod Boggs, a powerful figure with deep roots in West Virginia. Sean Bridgers portrays Hollis, a devoted family man trying to rebuild his life. Kerry Bishé plays Mary Smith, described as a mysterious and dangerous female inmate. Chris Coy takes the role of Mule, a dangerous and unpredictable inmate. Robin Weigert plays Chaplain Bannon, the prison chaplain who counsels inmates in need. Jean Louisa Kelly rounds out the group as Margaret, the new matriarch of a power-brokering political family.
Several of the new additions carry strong television credentials. Trammell is best known for his seven-season starring role in HBO's True Blood and recently recurred in the final season of HBO's Euphoria. Weigert, an Emmy nominee, is recognised for playing Calamity Jane in Deadwood and Ally Lowen in Sons of Anarchy. Coy is a series regular on the Netflix limited series Black Rabbit, opposite Jason Bateman and Jude Law.
Behind the camera, Dawn Olmstead, who executive produced the original Prison Break, returns in the same capacity for the reboot. She is joined by Paul Scheuring — creator of the original series — alongside Marty Adelstein and Neal Moritz as executive producers.
What makes this reboot stand out is the creative pivot. Where the original Prison Break centred on a man deliberately getting imprisoned to rescue his wrongly convicted brother, James's version shifts the perspective to a corrections officer working inside a lethal facility. The original ran on broadcast television; this one lives on streaming, where Hulu measures success through hours viewed and subscriber retention rather than weekly overnight ratings.
No premiere date has been announced. Deadline reported the casting on 17 August 2026.
