Netflix Develops 'Outer Banks' Prequel Series 'Kildare' as Original Show Ends Its Run

Netflix is developing a prequel series to Outer Banks, set on the fictional barrier island of Kildare two decades before the events of the original show, according to Deadline.
The prequel, referred to as Kildare, comes from Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke — the same trio who created and executive-produce Outer Banks. Josh Pate told Deadline that the team is currently working on the script. The concept had been on their minds for a couple of years, with Jonas Pate first mentioning it publicly in 2023 and 2024 interviews with Wilmington's Port City Daily.
The new series will explore the origins of Kildare's social divide — the fault line between the working-class Pogues and the wealthy Kooks that runs through the original show. It is set in the parents' generation, 20 years before the main series, and will feature a mix of known characters and new ones.
Timing matters here. Outer Banks Season 5, the show's final season, was released on August 20, 2026. The series is ending its five-season run, which has freed the creators to turn their attention to the prequel. The project has recently entered formal development at Netflix and, per Deadline, has been gaining momentum.
A representative for Netflix declined to comment.
Kildare is one of several projects the Pate brothers and Burke have in development under their Netflix overall deal — an arrangement where a studio or platform pays creators to develop projects exclusively for them. That deal gives the trio a creative home at the streamer beyond Outer Banks itself.
For fans, the prequel offers a chance to step back into a world they have spent five seasons in, but from a different angle. The Pogue-Kook divide is the engine of Outer Banks; a prequel set in the parents' era could fill in how that engine was built — who drew the lines, and why they hardened.
No release date, cast, or episode count has been announced. The project is in development, which means Netflix has not yet given it a formal series order — a green light that would commit to production. Until that happens, Kildare remains a script in progress from a team with a proven track record on the platform.
