Weezer's Rivers Cuomo Goes Full Gold on The Tonight Show Ahead of New Album Release
Rivers Cuomo turned up on NBC's The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, dressed head to toe in gold — trousers, jacket, bow tie, top hat, and gold makeup — to perform "We Might as Well Be Strangers" from Weezer's forthcoming self-titled album, known as The Gold Album (Billboard).
The album is set for release on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026, via Reprise/Warner Records. It is the seventh entry in Weezer's colour-coded series of self-titled albums — a run that began with 1994's Weezer (The Blue Album) — and the band's 16th studio album overall (Billboard).
"We Might as Well Be Strangers" serves as the lead single from The Gold Album. The track features the band Wednesday, weaving together vocals from Cuomo and Wednesday's vocalist (Consequence; Under the Radar).
Beyond the performance, Cuomo and bandmate Patrick Wilson sat down with Fallon for an interview in which Cuomo discussed the new album and Weezer's upcoming Weezer: The Gathering tour. The tour, announced in support of The Gold Album, kicks off in September 2026 with stops across North America (Billboard).
For a band that has colour-coded its entire self-titled discography — Blue, Green, Red, White, Teal, Black, and now Gold — the all-gold wardrobe was less a costume choice than a visual extension of the album's identity. The Tonight Show spot landed two days before the record reaches the public, giving late-night viewers an early look at the material and the aesthetic that comes with it.
The Gold Album arrives more than three decades after the band's 1994 debut. Fans won't have long to wait after the release to see the songs live: the Weezer: The Gathering tour opens the following month.
