A new Dungeons & Dragons game was announced on 26 August 2026, and instead of sending players into a dungeon, it puts them behind the bar. Developer Homo Ludens and publisher Dotemu are building Dungeons & Dragons: Long Rest Tavern, a tavern-management sim heading to PC in 2027 (GameSpot).

The title is a nod to the "long rest" mechanic in D&D — the downtime between encounters where characters sleep, eat and recover. Here, that downtime becomes the whole game. Players start with a humble small tavern in the Dalelands, a region of Faerûn (the default fantasy world D&D is set in), and grow it into a formidable operation (GameSpot).

An official reveal trailer shows a Sims-like interface for building out the tavern room by room. Players can hire staff, each with their own specialties, strengths and weaknesses. Adventurers who stay at the inn can be assigned challenges, and new tavern recipes can enhance their abilities before they head back out into the world (GameSpot).

Not every customer is friendly. A rival innkeeper tries to stifle the player's business, adding a competitive edge to the management loop. Dice also factor into the gameplay, tying the tavern-running back to traditional D&D mechanics where a roll of the polyhedrals can decide how things go (GameSpot).

The game now has an official Steam store page (app ID 2837690) where players can wishlist it ahead of release (Steam). Polygon described the concept as letting players "live every adventurer's dream" — though in this case, the dream is keeping the beds made and the stew hot (Polygon).

What makes the project stand out is its angle. Most D&D licensed games cast the player as the hero slaying monsters. Long Rest Tavern casts the player as the person refilling the hero's tankard and collecting the gold. It is a shift in perspective that turns the fantasy setting's supporting infrastructure into the main event.

No specific release date within 2027 has been announced. The game is listed for PC only at this stage.
