Harry Styles Points at MSG's Wedding History — and the Crowd Knows Exactly Which One He Means
Harry Styles told a Madison Square Garden crowd that the arena "also does weddings" during night three of his residency on Saturday, Aug. 29 — and the cheers that followed made clear everyone was thinking of the same one.
"We're at Madison Square Garden, home of the world champion New York Knicks!" Styles said, according to Billboard. "And they also do weddings." The joke referenced Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's July 3 wedding at the same venue. Billboard
Styles and Swift dated from November 2012 to January 2013. Their relationship is widely understood to have inspired Swift's 2014 hit "Style," and fan footage from a July 3 Wembley show on Styles' own tour captured him singing "Two Ghosts" — his 2017 track long rumoured to be a response — including the lines "Same lips red, same eyes blue / Same white shirt, couple more tattoos." That Wembley date fell on the night of the Swift-Kelce wedding, which Styles reportedly received an invitation to but did not attend. The wedding joke landed in the middle of a 30-show MSG residency that makes up the entirety of Styles' 2026 U.S. tour dates and runs through Halloween. The run opened Aug. 26 after 11.5 million presale ticket registrations in January — a volume Ticketmaster called the highest ever recorded for an artist presale. It is Styles' first run of live shows since 2023, in support of his new album Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally, released in March.
On opening night, Styles completely overhauled his usual setlist, a departure from the largely unchanged show he had played across 33 prior tour dates. He also paused to honour Dolly Parton, who had died the day before. Parton's 1974 recording of "I Will Always Love You" played over the PA as the crowd sang along, with Zoë Kravitz, Gayle King and Drew Barrymore among those in attendance. The Swift-Kelce wedding on July 3 drew its own share of headlines around who could and could not make it. Shania Twain said a Harry Styles gig — she had been opening for Swift's run the month before — conflicted with the MSG nuptials and kept her away. For fans, the MSG wedding nod adds another verse to a story they have been reading for over a decade — one where the songs point at each other across albums, and the people who wrote them keep ending up in the same room, or almost in the same room, with an arena full of people watching.
