A headteacher in Nepal evacuated 900 children from his school minutes before a flash flood engulfed the area, an act he later said would have been impossible if delayed by even ten minutes.

Rajendra Dawadi, headteacher of Tribhuwan Trishuli secondary school in Nuwakot, which has 1,600 pupils, received four separate flood warnings within minutes on the morning the disaster struck. One came from Betrawati, a town directly upstream on the Trishuli River. Dawadi halted classes and ordered the children to higher ground. Dawadi told The Guardian that had the decision come ten minutes later, he and the students would not have survived. Sixteen-year-old student Yunisha said she and her friends escaped by just ten seconds.

The disaster was triggered by a glacial collapse on the Nepal-Tibet border that sent a wall of water and debris downstream on a Wednesday morning, according to the US Geological Survey. A glacial collapse occurs when a mass of ice breaks off and releases meltwater that was trapped behind it, sending a sudden surge racing through river valleys below. The event devastated communities along the river system, and the toll has climbed sharply over subsequent days. More than 3,700 people have been rescued from the floods so far. At least 69 schools were destroyed or damaged, affecting nearly 19,000 children, according to Save the Children. India's Ministry of External Affairs said at least 320 Indians were among those missing.

The scale of the foreign casualty count reflects the geography of the disaster. The Nepal-Tibet border region draws trekkers, pilgrims, and labor migrants from across South Asia, and the glacial collapse struck without the lead time that downstream communities in flood-prone river basins typically rely on. The concentration of missing foreigners from multiple countries, including India and China, gives the event a cross-border humanitarian dimension that extends beyond Nepal's domestic disaster response capacity.

Nepal's foreign minister called for a global response to the climate crisis, arguing that the Nepali people had disproportionately become major victims of climate change despite contributing a fraction of the planet's fossil fuel emissions. That framing positions the disaster not merely as a national catastrophe but as a data point in the unresolved debate over climate finance and loss-and-damage compensation — payments that wealthy, high-emitting countries would owe to vulnerable nations for damage caused by warming they did little to create.

The broader context here matters for how the international community reads this event. Nepal sits at the intersection of two structural vulnerabilities: its mountainous topography makes it acutely exposed to cascading hazards from the Hindu Kush-Himalaya cryosphere (the region's frozen water stores, including glaciers and glacial lakes), and its institutional capacity for early warning, while tested and in Dawadi's case effective at the local level, remains uneven across the country's river systems. The gap between a headteacher acting on four phone calls within minutes and a national system that saw the death toll nearly double in three days points to where the architecture of disaster response is straining.

Dawadi's decision also illustrates the asymmetry in glacial flood preparedness. The chain of warnings he received, informal and upstream-sourced, functioned as an ad hoc early warning system. It worked for 900 children in one school. It did not reach everyone along the river in time to prevent 781 deaths.

The figures are still evolving. The missing count of 2,502, including 592 foreigners, suggests the final toll may rise further as search and rescue operations continue along the affected river corridors.
