The final chapter of Square Enix's Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy will ship with post-launch story content after all. Director Naoki Hamaguchi announced on 3 September 2026 that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will receive two story DLC expansions, one focused on Sephiroth and the other on Vincent Valentine (Video Games Chronicle).

The main game is dated for release on 8 April 2027 across PS5, Xbox, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC — a simultaneous, multi-platform launch confirmed during a PlayStation State of Play live stream (Square Enix press release). Square Enix's official press release also confirms the two DLC expansions featuring Sephiroth and Vincent. No release dates or further details were provided for either piece of additional content.

DLC — downloadable content released after a game's launch, usually as extra story chapters, characters, or modes — was not always on the table for this project. Hamaguchi had previously said the third game's ending would provide a definitive conclusion to the overall story, and that any DLC would have to focus on something other than the main narrative (Video Games Chronicle).

That position shifted. Hamaguchi said on social media that the decision came after receiving many requests from fans and media following the announcement of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation. He also said the team wanted to share their DLC plans before the main game's release rather than announcing them after launch — a departure from the common industry practice of waiting to see sales figures before committing to post-launch content (Video Games Chronicle).

The choice of characters tracks with earlier comments. In an interview with Automaton Media published 1 August 2026, Hamaguchi confirmed that Vincent Valentine's backstory would receive new content in Revelation (Automaton Media). Vincent — a brooding, optionally recruitable character in the 1997 original who was fully integrated into the remake trilogy's second installment — has long been a fan favourite whose origins remained thinly explored. Sephiroth, the trilogy's central antagonist, needs little introduction.

For fans, the reversal is the news. A definitive ending that still leaves room for two character-focused expansions is a different proposition from a closed book. Whether the DLC slots into the main story or runs alongside it remains unstated. Square Enix has not announced pricing for either expansion, though the publisher has confirmed a "Twin Pack" bundle for the base game priced at US$59.99 (Square Enix press release).

The remake trilogy began with Final Fantasy 7 Remake in 2020 and continued with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth in 2024. Revelation is the closing entry — the finale of a project that has reimagined the 1997 original across three full-length games.
