Blizzard announces Diablo 5 for Spring 2029, with Diablo already victorious
Diablo has already won.
Blizzard announced Diablo 5 during the opening ceremony of BlizzCon 2026 on 12 September 2026. The reveal came in a short teaser video, a brief preview with no gameplay. The game is scheduled for release in Spring 2029, according to GameSpot.
The story starts from defeat. Diablo 5 is set 100 years after the defeat of Mephisto in Diablo 4: Lord of Hatred. Sanctuary, the fantasy world where the series takes place, lies in ruins. Diablo reigns supreme.
Blizzard is framing the game around that loss. Its story will ask what heroes have to become in a world that has already been destroyed. It is a post-apocalyptic setup, meaning the fight begins after the worst has happened.
More answers are due this weekend. Blizzard plans to share further details on lore, classes and gameplay features during a Diablo 5 panel at BlizzCon. Classes are the character types players pick from, each with its own weapons and skills.
The sequel was not the only Diablo news. Blizzard said at BlizzCon 2026 that the Amazon will be the next playable class in Diablo IV, according to Blizzard. It also said a Diablo animated series is being developed with Netflix.
BlizzCon 2026 itself is scheduled for 12–13 September 2026, according to Blizzard. The two-day fan convention in Anaheim includes game reveals, panels and the Blizzard Classic Cup, a tournament for its older titles, listed by BlizzCon.
