Diablo 4 expansions are over as Blizzard turns to Diablo 5

Diablo 4 will get no more expansions. Blizzard is ending large add-ons for the game and putting its effort into seasonal updates and Diablo 5.

Game director Brent Gibson said there are no plans for further Diablo 4 expansions. The team is focussed on seasons and getting to Diablo 5, he said in an interview at BlizzCon GameSpot.

Diablo 5 was revealed during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony. It is now in development and slated for release in Spring 2029, according to Blizzard Blizzard.

The sequel is set 100 years after Diablo 4, in a world where Diablo, the Lord of Terror, reigns supreme. Gibson said Blizzard has closed the “story of Hatred” with the Lord of Hatred expansion and is now moving to the “story of Terror”.

That makes Diablo 4 an outlier in the series. It is the only Diablo game to have received more than one expansion. Its first expansion was Vessel of Hatred. The second, Lord of Hatred, was released in April, about a year and a half later. Before Diablo 4’s release, Blizzard had said the game would receive annual expansions.

An expansion here means a large paid add-on, with a new story and zone. What continues instead are seasons, free limited-time updates that give players a fresh start with new powers and rewards. Gibson told PC Gamer at BlizzCon that those seasons are planned to lead into the events of Diablo 5 PC Gamer.

Blizzard does not yet have a fixed path for that build-up. Gibson said the team does not have a perfect picture of the story route to Diablo 5 and will respond to fan reactions season to season. The next step is Season 15, titled Hell’s Legacy, which begins on September 15. The Amazon class will also join Diablo 4 as standalone DLC, content sold separately, rather than as part of a full expansion.

Gibson said Blizzard will keep supporting Diablo 4 for a very long time as long as people are playing it. Elsewhere in the series, Diablo 2: Resurrected received a new class earlier this year, and Diablo 3 is cycling through its biggest seasons in a time loop. Blizzard also announced a new animated series during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony.

For players, this means a slower bridge to the next game. No new paid story chapter, but regular seasonal stories that point toward Spring 2029.
