Blizzard says Diablo V had to be a whole new game because its plans were too large to fit inside Diablo 4.

Diablo senior production director Tiffany Wat and executive producer Matt Zitterman spoke to GameSpot at BlizzCon about the decision. They said the team wanted deeply structural changes that are hard to make in an expansion, a paid add-on built onto an existing game. GameSpot

Zitterman said Blizzard needed to give Diablo his own game to tell a story on par with or exceeding the story told with Lilith and Mephisto. That choice set the scope. It meant new systems from the ground up, not a continuation of Diablo 4.

Blizzard revealed Diablo V during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony. The company has scheduled the game for release in Spring 2029, and the team is currently aiming for that window. Blizzard

BlizzCon 2026 took place on 12-13 September 2026. Blizzard also staged a Diablo V: Forging the Next Era panel at the show to outline its plans. Blizzard

The story starts from defeat. Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has won. The heroes are gone.

Players enter as the Heir to Westmarch. Blizzard has not yet detailed how that role will play, only that it puts the player at the centre of what comes after the fall.

Blizzard does not plan to release new expansions for Diablo 4 going forward. That draws a clear line between the two games.

For fans, this means a clean break rather than a longer road for Diablo 4. One story is finished. Another starts with Diablo in charge.
