Seth Green Was Never in Talks for Cancelled Buffy Reboot

Seth Green was never in talks to play Oz again in Hulu's Buffy reboot. By the time he spoke about it, there was no reboot left to join. The project, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, was cancelled after its pilot.

A pilot is a single test episode made before a streamer orders a full series. A reboot takes a familiar title and starts a new story under it. Hulu stopped at that stage. Star Sarah Michelle Gellar shared the outcome in an Instagram video, saying Hulu had decided not to move forward, as reported by Variety. The plan had been for Ryan Kiera Armstrong to lead as the new slayer, with Gellar returning as Buffy.

Green addressed his absence on the 8 September episode of The McBride Rewind podcast. The actor was 52 at the time of September 2026 coverage, according to People. He said he had taken part in no discussions about reprising the role. He was direct about that gap. There were no talks and no offer.

That does not mean he would have said no. Green said he would return as Oz if asked. His answer was simple. He would love to see where Oz is now if an Oz story was written. In television terms, that is interest, not an agreement. The door is open, but no story was put to him.

Green played Oz on the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer. That series ran from 1997 to 2003 for seven seasons and starred Gellar as Buffy Summers. Green spoke about that early period of recognition in a separate interview. He said he got good at being invisible during uncomfortable early years of fame, according to EW.

For fans, this means the story closes in two parts. Armstrong will not debut as the new slayer in this project, and Gellar will not extend her original run here. Green was not holding out and was not turned away. The conversation about Oz never started, and a pilot that does not advance does not become a series. For the people who would have made it, that is the difference between one episode and a job that continues.
