Diablo 5 to Bring Back Set Items, Fix Old Problem

Set items are coming back in Diablo 5.
Executive producer Matt Zitterman told GameSpot at BlizzCon that Blizzard wants to restore the matching gear sets and solve the problem that long came with them. The sequel is not expected to release until 2029. GameSpot
Set items are weapons and armour designed to be worn together, with bonus powers that switch on when you equip several pieces from the same set. Diablo 4, released in 2023, launched without them. Blizzard later added set bonuses through the Talisman system, which grants linked bonuses without needing full matching gear.
Zitterman said the Diablo 5 team has ideas to stop complete sets from narrowing the itemisation game, the ongoing choice about which loot to keep, upgrade and build a character around. The issue is well known to players. Once one full set becomes strongest, other drops lose value.
Blizzard is leaning on series history for the answer. Zitterman said the team looked to past games and picked the best elements to carry forward into Diablo 5. GameSpot
That backward look is clear in the loot rules shared at BlizzCon 2026. Belts return as wearable equipment. Items will again occupy multiple inventory slots based on type, similar to Diablo 2, where a sword takes more space than a ring. PC Gamer Runes, small stones slotted into gear to add effects, will return in a new form. Inven Global
The setting moves on. Diablo 5 takes place 100 years after Diablo 4, giving Blizzard a changed Sanctuary to explore. Blizzard has also promised a rich and deep crafting system inspired by Lord of Hatred's, for making and customising gear, and showed the first glimpse of Diablo V during the BlizzCon 2026 Opening Ceremony. Blizzard had listed Diablo V for release in Spring 2029 when it unveiled the project. The newer timing points to 2029 without locking a season.
For fans, this means the hunt could feel broader. Chasing a full set may sit alongside crafting, runes and other legendaries, rather than ending the search.
