Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings past Star Wars for domestic box-office crown
Spider-Man: Brand New Day has overtaken Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the highest-grossing domestic release of all time.
The Marvel film reached $936.773 million in the United States and Canada — domestic is the industry term for those two markets combined — after 47 days in theatres, Variety reported on 16 September 2026. The Force Awakens had held the lead with $936 million. The record fell fast.
Speed set this run apart. Brand New Day was the fastest film to reach $700 million domestically, in 13 days, then the fastest to $800 million in 19 days and to $900 million in 36 days, according to Variety. It is only the second film ever to pass $900 million domestically. The Hollywood Reporter reported that it was also the fastest to every major domestic milestone from $400 million through $900 million.
The start was enormous. The film opened to $360 million in North America and $932 million globally, Variety reported. That North American debut moved past Avengers: Endgame for the biggest domestic opening weekend ever, while the film also earned the highest-grossing first week in domestic box-office history, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Earlier in the run it set an opening-day record with $168 million, including $72 million in previews, the most of any film in history.
Globally, Brand New Day has grossed $2.45 billion and ranks as the third-highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, Variety reported. It sits behind Avatar at No. 1 and Avengers: Endgame at No. 2, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It cleared $1 billion globally after six days of release, the second-fastest after Endgame, and reached $2 billion after three weekends. Endgame had reached $2 billion in 11 days.
The film was directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is Tom Holland's fourth solo outing as Peter Parker, Variety reported. It stars Holland alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal, and was produced by Marvel Studios and Amy Pascal, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sink plays Jean Grey. It launched in theatres on 31 July and led the domestic box office in its first six weekends of release.
Its summer also set a wider mark. The season finished as the highest-grossing summer ever at the global box office with $4.765 billion, topping the previous record from 2013, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
What makes this stand out is the concentration. A decade-old domestic record, an opening-weekend record and a summer record all moved in the same seven-week stretch.
