Tom Cruise went to watch the Kansas City Chiefs and got a football lesson from Taylor Swift.

The actor said Swift was “schooling” him when the two sat side by side at the Chiefs’ first game of the season. He told the story on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, as Variety reported.

“She was bringing the football,” Cruise said of Swift’s game-day knowledge, according to Rolling Stone. He joked that she knew nothing about the sport when she first met Kansas City tight end Travis Kelce, her now-fiancé, but knows her stuff now.

Cruise said the pair talked music and movies through the game. He has followed Swift since she was a kid and called her a genius on the show.

He piled on the praise from there. He called her funny, with a great sense of humour, and described her as a brilliant writer, a brilliant musician and director, and very skilled.

The two have crossed paths before. Cruise attended Swift’s Eras Tour in London in 2024. Swift stepped behind the camera herself for 2021’s All Too Well: The Short Film, starring Sadie Sink and Dylan O’Brien, and in late 2022 it was announced she would make her feature directing debut for Searchlight Pictures.

What makes this stand out is the timing. Cruise was on Fallon to publicise Digger, his new film directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, and also spoke about his transformation for the role, according to a clip shared by Fallon Tonight.

The press tour keeps its football theme. Cruise is due to appear on New Heights, the podcast hosted by Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce, in an episode releasing on Friday.
