Switch 2 sets US sales record as Nintendo says it is just beginning
Nintendo Switch 2 has become the fastest-selling video game hardware device in US history, overtaking the record held by the PlayStation 4. Sales have reached nearly 20 million almost one year after release, Eurogamer reported on 18 September 2026.
The assessment came from Devon Pritchard, chief operating officer of Nintendo of America. In an interview with Variety, reported by Eurogamer, Pritchard said: "We're at the beginning of Nintendo Switch 2." She added: "This is just beginning."
Pritchard namechecked The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time when discussing what comes next. The Switch 2 remake, a rebuild of the recognised 1990s classic for new hardware, received its full reveal during Nintendo's Legend of Zelda 40th anniversary Direct after an earlier teaser.
Nintendo lists The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake as coming on 5 November 2026 and exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, according to Nintendo. The company describes it as the classic adventure reborn on Nintendo Switch 2 with various enhancements. The anniversary Direct, held on 8 September 2026, also announced a new Zelda-themed Switch 2 and amiibo, small figures that unlock extras in games.
That September presentation covered more than Zelda. Nintendo Direct unveiled new games and updates for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch including The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Kingdom Hearts IV and Xenoblade Genesis. The line-up points to Nintendo organising its new hardware around familiar favourites alongside new titles.
Another Zelda project sits outside games. Nintendo is working with Sony Pictures on a The Legend of Zelda film due at the end of April. No further release detail was given in the latest report.
Sales have moved quickly since launch. Nintendo sold 19.9 million Switch 2 units in the financial year ended 31 March 2026, Reuters reported on 8 May 2026. On the same date, the company forecast annual Switch 2 sales of 16.5 million units. That followed an earlier forecast of 15 million units for the financial year ending March 2026.
For fans, this means a record start with the calendar still filling in. The hardware record is set. The remake date is locked. The film is next on the slate.
