Nintendo says Switch 2 story is just beginning

Nintendo says it is still at the beginning of the Nintendo Switch 2 story.

That was the message from Devon Pritchard, president and COO of Nintendo of America, in an interview at the Variety Entertainment & Technology Summit presented by EY. She spoke to Variety co-editor-in-chief Cynthia Littleton during a session on 17 September 2026 titled "Conversation with Devon Pritchard, President and COO, Nintendo of America". Variety

Pritchard said the company is at the start of the new console's life, not settling into it. GameSpot The language will sound familiar to Nintendo watchers. The original Nintendo Switch was released in 2017. The Switch 2 was released in mid-2025. Back in 2022, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the first Switch had only reached the halfway point of its life cycle, the expected selling life of a console before it is replaced.

The interview also covered The Legend of Zelda, the adventure series that was marking its 40th anniversary at the time. A remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is scheduled to come to Switch 2 in November. That will be followed next spring by a live-action Zelda film.

Nintendo is making the film with Sony Pictures. It is set to come out at the end of April. The film arrives after the game, giving Nintendo a remake and a cinema release in back-to-back seasons.

Pritchard took over as president of Nintendo of America after Doug Bowser stepped down. Bowser's exit was announced in September 2025. Pritchard, described at the time as a nearly 20-year veteran of the video game industry, succeeded him in the role.

For fans, this means a long runway. New hardware often gets its biggest games in the first few years, with more titles, updates and accessories added over time. If Nintendo holds to Pritchard's wording, Switch 2 owners can expect that pattern again.
