HBO orders Javier Bardem drama The Spread straight to series

HBO has ordered The Spread, a new drama starring Javier Bardem, straight to series.

A straight-to-series order means no pilot is shot first. The show goes directly into production as a full series. The order was reported by Deadline on 18 September 2026.

Bardem will headline the series. He will also serve as an executive producer, meaning he helps guide the show behind the camera as well as in front of it. That dual role puts him at the centre of the project on screen and in the production team.

The series was written by Bill Dubuque and Sean Sansiveri. It hails from Dubuque, Sansiveri and Fifth Season, the production company behind the project. In television terms, that credit identifies where the show originated and who developed it before a broadcaster came aboard.

HBO will co-produce The Spread with Fifth Season. A co-production means the two companies share the work and cost of organising and making the series. Matthew Vaughn is set to direct.

Four other buyers chased the project before it landed at HBO. Netflix, Prime Video, Paramount+ and Apple TV all made offers. HBO won out.

What makes this stand out is the contest. Five major buyers do not chase every drama. A straight series commitment after that kind of bidding gives the production a clear slot and a full crew from the start.

For fans, this means patience is needed. Casting around Bardem, filming and post-production come next. HBO has not yet announced a premiere date or episode count.
