Madonna and Charli XCX have released 'Danceteria Afterhours' on 24 September, their first song together.

The track is a reworked version of 'Danceteria', a song from Madonna's 'Confessions II', according to Rolling Stone. It was produced by Madonna, Andrew Watt, Cirkut and Stuart Price. The pair had announced 24 September as the release date two days earlier, with Billboard noting it as their first musical collaboration.

The song moves through New York nightclub lore. It centres on Madonna's nights at Danceteria. Short lines land the names. Madonna name-checks Fab 5 Freddy, Basquiat and Rock Steady Crew in her verses.

Danceteria opened in midtown Manhattan before settling at its 21st Street location in 1982. Madonna gave her first live performance there. She reportedly handed DJ Mark Kamin her 'Everybody' demo at the club, and he played it first to a packed crowd. That early exchange gave the venue a lasting place in her story.

Before release, Madonna and Charli XCX organised a Club Confessions party with Saint Laurent during Paris Fashion Week. The event brought the collaboration to guests in Paris ahead of the commercial release. It tied the record to fashion week rather than a traditional launch show.

Attention now turns to live television. Madonna is slated to perform at the MTV Video Music Awards on 27 September, her first performance at the ceremony in 23 years. She leads the night with 11 nominations, largely for the short film she crafted for 'Confessions II'. Warner Records confirmed the 24 September release date in its announcement and noted two additional VMA nominations for Madonna, as detailed in Warner Records.

For fans who still buy discs, Madonna's official shop lists a US CD edition of 'madonna & charli - danceteria'. The listing describes a 3-track CD single in a black art sleeve, with the Afterhours mix with Charli XCX, the Harry Romero remix and the original version. The CD gives buyers all three versions in one package.

The release sits inside a wider 'Confessions II' rollout. Madonna's official website promotes a Barnes & Noble exclusive edition of the album. It also lists a 'Confessions II' Cover Tee Numbered 2LP Bundle, described as a 16-track numbered deluxe 2LP set sold as a direct-to-consumer exclusive, and a 'Confessions II' Neon Tee Deluxe CD Bundle built around a 16-track CD. A 2LP set is a double vinyl album; direct-to-consumer means sold through the artist's own store rather than other retailers.

What makes this stand out is the link between past and present. The club provides the setting. The new vocal provides the update. The VMAs performance will take that pairing to a large broadcast audience.
