Madonna and Charli xcx have won Billboard's weekly new-music fan vote with "Danceteria Afterhours".

The song took 63% of the vote in the poll published Friday, Sept. 25, Billboard reported on Sept. 27. The margin was wide. That share is more than double the total for the runner-up, and readers were asked to pick their favourite release from the past week.

"Afterhours" is a new mix of "Danceteria", first heard on Madonna's album Confessions II. That album arrived in July. The new version keeps Madonna's original recording and adds verses from Charli xcx.

The original album track was produced by Stuart Price, Billboard's CA edition reported. A separate club remix made with Harry Romero was released on Aug. 21. A remix keeps the main song but retools the production for clubs and radio. That version helped "Danceteria" reach No. 1 on Dance Airplay, the chart that tracks plays on dance radio stations in the United States, Billboard reported.

Album form has been strong for both artists this summer. Confessions II entered at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the main US albums chart, in July. It was Madonna's first chart-topping LP of the 2020s. Charli xcx's Music, Fashion, Film followed in August and started at No. 3 on the same chart. Both totals were counted by Billboard for the US market.

Taylor Swift placed second in the fan poll with 27% of the vote. Her contender was The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. It is an extended version of her Showgirl album with four extra tracks, led by the single "Patient Zero". An extended version keeps the original track list and adds new songs for listeners who already have the album. Tinashe's Popstar album collected almost 3% of the vote.

Away from the charts, Madonna leads the field at this year's MTV Video Music Awards with 13 nominations, Yahoo Entertainment reported. The nominations were reported ahead of this year's ceremony.

For fans, this means one song is working in several places at once. It is an album cut, a radio No. 1 in remixed form, an awards-season entry point, and now a collaboration with a new vocalist that voters have picked as their favourite.
