South Park pulled 4.2 million viewers in three days with its Season 29 premiere.

The opener, retitled “South America”, counted viewing across Comedy Central and Paramount+ in the United States, according to three-day figures reported by Variety. That total sits just below the Season 28 premiere, which reached 4.3 million in the same window.

The new episode won where advertisers look closest. It scored a 0.97 rating among adults aged 18 to 49, meaning that share of the age group watched, up 33% on the 0.73 for Season 28.

Its share was stronger too. The premiere took a 4.77 share, meaning that proportion of televisions in use at the time were tuned in, against 3.96 last season.

Between Monday and Friday of premiere week, “South America” was the most-watched cable telecast among adults 18 to 49, excluding sports programming. It is a tight contest each week. South Park took it.

The episode aired on Wednesday, 16 September at 10:00 PM ET/PT on Comedy Central, and was made available next day on Paramount+ in the US and on demand with TV providers. For the new run, the long-running cartoon temporarily dropped South Park for South America, a parody of Donald Trump’s initiatives to rename major landmarks.

Social chatter was loud. On premiere day it ranked as the No. 1 most social cable comedy. Over three days it drew 11 million views and one million engagements, plus 63,000 online mentions, up 40% on the Season 28 premiere.

What makes this stand out is the split. Total viewing dipped slightly. Young adult viewing jumped. For fans, this means the show’s core audience of favourite characters in a small Colorado town is still turning up on time, and in larger numbers than last year.
