Metallica opens Sphere residency with giant album art

Metallica turned three of its album covers into towering, wraparound images to open its Life Burns Faster residency at Sphere in Las Vegas on Thursday, 1 October.
The first night started an eight-show run at the venue, which Sphere lists as continuing the band's No Repeat Weekend format, in which paired shows feature different set lists. The band had announced the opening pair as 1 and 3 October, with six further shows to follow, according to a statement on its website Metallica.
The residency title comes from a lyric in "Master of Puppets". The band confirmed the Sphere dates in February and organised the run in two-night sets.
On opening night, the songs "Ride the Lightning", "Master of Puppets" and "...And Justice for All" each arrived with expanded versions of their sleeve art filling the dome Rolling Stone. The images surrounded the audience. They moved with the music.
For "Ride the Lightning", the screens placed the crowd inside the electric chair. Two wooden arm rests sat on either side. An electrode cap hovered overhead.
"The Call of Ktulu" brought a different kind of scale. The visuals showed a sea creature rising out of the ocean before moving through Las Vegas. The piece is an instrumental inspired by the writer H.P. Lovecraft.
The show closed with "Master of Puppets", from the 1986 album of the same name. An animation of that album cover filled the screens for the title track.
The original cover was painted by Don Brautigam. It shows hands with marionette strings reaching down toward crosses marking the graves of soldiers.
Inside Sphere, those white crosses appeared to stretch for what looked like miles as they climbed the curved display. The venue's screen measures 160,000 square feet and rises 240 feet into the air.
The second night of the opening pair is listed for 3 October, with a start time of 8:30 PM advertised for the 1 October show Sphere. Later dates reported for the run include 15 and 17 October Loudwire.
For ticket holders arriving early, the band has set up the Life Burns Faster Experience just off Restaurant Row on level one near the Bridge to Sphere. The band notes that its Full House Ticket covers only the 2026 Life Burns Faster dates at Sphere and does not allow entry to other shows.
What makes this stand out is how literal the staging is. The artwork is not decoration behind the band. It becomes the room itself, with the chair, the monster and the crosses built to fill the field of view.
