The Lord of the Rings Musical to Open in Istanbul Before World Tour

The Lord of the Rings is going back on stage, starting in Istanbul.
A new production of the musical will open at Zorlu Performing Arts Center on 8 October 2027. Producers confirmed the launch date on 7 October 2026, according to WhatsOnStage. Istanbul will be the first stop before the company travels internationally.
Istanbul is just the start. After Turkey, the tour is booked to visit Bucharest, Prague, Warsaw, Thessaloniki, Tallinn, Athens, Sofia, Zagreb and Dubai. That list already spans central and eastern Europe, Greece and the Gulf. Producers said further venues and dates are to be announced.
Bruce Guthrie will direct the touring production. He will lead the cast and the creative team through rehearsals and into opening night. Andrzej Goulding will provide the scenic, video and puppetry design, meaning the physical sets, the projected images and the creatures built and operated on stage. It is a big toolkit for a story that moves from the Shire to Mordor.
The music comes from three sources. The score is by A R Rahman, the Finnish folk group Värttinä and Christopher Nightingale. The book and lyrics, the spoken story and the words sung on stage, are by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus. The show is based on the books by J R R Tolkien.
The company will be put together in Britain. Casting and rehearsals will take place in the UK, with auditions scheduled for early 2027. A tour, meaning one company travels with its sets, costumes and crew from city to city, will then carry that work abroad.
Behind the production are Kevin Wallace and William Bennett for KW Productions, George Isaak for People Entertainment Group, and Middle-earth Enterprises, LLC. Peter Huntley and Callum Runciman act as executive producers and general managers for Smart Entertainment. That role covers the business side of touring, from contracts and budgets to moving the show between theatres.
The announcement follows a much smaller staging at The Watermill Theatre in Newbury. That version, directed by Paul Hart with design by Simon Kenny, was performed across the theatre's auditorium and gardens from 25 July to 15 October 2023, according to Playbill. It was built for an intimate room. This new production is built to travel.
For fans, this means a long wait with a clear map. Nine cities after Istanbul are already named, with more to come. No casting or on-sale dates have been given yet. Auditions in early 2027 are the next step to watch.
