Netflix has renewed Crew Girl for a second season. The order keeps Teagan Tao's story on the water after a first season that premiered on Sept. 10.

The series is a YA sports romance, meaning a young-adult story built around love and competition, created by Vivian Lin for Netflix, according to The Hollywood Reporter. It stars 22-year-old Toronto native Miku Martineau as Teagan Tao, a 16-year-old from Southern California.

Teagan is forced to move across the country to an elite prep school. When she finds there is no girls rowing team, she joins the boys team as coxswain, the crew member who sits in the boat, steers and calls the rhythm for the rowers.

Martineau told the Reporter she arrived with little to no knowledge of rowing. She and her castmates then went through an organised three-week bootcamp to learn the sport. Before the show, she said she avoided the erg machine at the gym, the sliding-seat rowing trainer, because she felt she was using it incorrectly, according to Netflix Tudum.

That learning curve is striking because Martineau grew up playing sport. She played hockey and gymnastics, and also did figure skating, volleyball and soccer. Rowing was new.

On screen, rowing quickly shares space with romance. Teagan is caught in a love triangle between Josh, played by Sam Braun, and Cam, played by Kyle Clark. Off screen, the young cast stay in touch in a group chat called "Too Fast, Too Furious", according to Yahoo.

For fans, this means more time with that triangle in season two. Martineau said in a statement she is "beyond excited for Crew Girl season two", according to The Hollywood Reporter.

She has ideas for what comes after, too. A hockey player growing up, Martineau said she would be down to do a female version of Heated Rivalry or another hockey-related show.
