Ted Lasso has stepped down.

The Season 4 finale, titled "The Departing Lass", is now streaming on Apple TV. Apple TV Press dates the episode to 7 October 2026 and bills it with the tagline "Big changes in bunches" Apple TV Press.

The biggest change is on the touchline. Ted, played by Jason Sudeikis, hands the manager job for the AFC Richmond women's team to Alice Chilton, played by Tanya Reynolds. He moves himself to assistant manager, meaning second-in-command, alongside Coach Beard, played by Brendan Hunt Variety.

The handover comes with a gift. Ted gives Alice a whistle in a red box, a sign she is now Head Coach of the Lady Greyhounds Deadline. Hunt, who is also an executive producer and writer on the show, told Variety the demotion was planned from the start of the writers' room. He said Sudeikis wanted Ted to step aside, with Episode 1 opening on a "Lasso assistant manager" nametag.

Roy Kent gets a new job too. He is offered the manager role at Chelsea and accepts it. At the same time, Roy and Keeley, played by Juno Temple, are about to have a child. When Roy wants advice on becoming a dad, Nate turns up at Nelson Road and joins a Diamond Dogs reunion, the coaches' tight-knit support circle.

There is a proposal and a farewell at the club. Owner Rebecca, played by Hannah Waddingham, proposes marriage to her boyfriend Matthijs, played by Matteo van der Grijn. Favourite pub owner Mae, played by Annette Badland, dies. Her will returns her AFC Richmond shares to Rebecca, which keeps Rebecca at 51% ownership and stops Zelda, played by Tracey Ullman, from buying a controlling interest.

The music changes as well. The finale uses a new version of the opening theme performed by Brandi Carlile, who took over from Marcus Mumford Variety.

The episode closes a run that began globally on 5 August 2026 with one episode, followed by new episodes every Wednesday, according to Apple. Season 4 centres on Hunt and Jeremy Swift coaching a second-division women's football team. The cast also includes Waddingham, Temple, Brett Goldstein, Hunt and Swift. The series was created by Sudeikis, Hunt, Bill Lawrence and Joe Kelly.

For fans, this means a reshaped Richmond. Hunt spoke to Variety about the finale, including whether there will be a Season 5.
