Don Toliver says Drake collaboration gave him everything he wanted

Don Toliver says “Solar Eclipse”, his new collaboration with Drake, gave him everything he wanted from working together. He spoke on Oct. 6 at the Grammy Museum in Los Angeles in an interview with Heran Mamo, as reported by Billboard.
The two rappers recorded two songs together, “Cold Shoulder” and “Solar Eclipse”. Both tracks premiered during Drake’s FOMO livestream in September and were then included on the deluxe edition of Drake’s HABIBTI (FOMO) on Oct. 2.
That deluxe adds four new songs to the original release. Drake had previewed collaborations with Toliver and with Ella Langley during the September stream.
“Solar Eclipse” interpolates “Choosin’ Texas” by Ella Langley. An interpolation, where a new recording replays part of an earlier song, credits the original writers without sampling the original audio.
“Cold Shoulder” is built around Toliver and singer Yebba. It was described after the stream as a melodic rap cut with warm gospel vocals, and videos for both “Cold Shoulder” and “Solar Eclipse” from the FOMO sessions are now available on YouTube.
Toliver said he grew up listening to Drake’s Comeback Season era. He named So Far Gone as one of his favourite albums.
The link-up follows a strong year for Toliver. His album OCTANE was released in January and gave him his first No. 1 on the Billboard 200, the US albums chart. All 18 tracks from the album reached the Billboard Hot 100, the US singles chart.
He has since taken the Octane World Tour to arenas across North America. Drake joined him as a special guest at the Toronto date in August, where Drake performed several songs live from his forthcoming ICEMAN project for the first time.
Toliver also confirmed he is working on a follow-up to OCTANE titled NITROUS.
For listeners keeping track, the two collaborations tie several threads together. Langley’s writing feeds into “Solar Eclipse”, Yebba’s voice anchors “Cold Shoulder”, and a Toronto tour appearance has turned into a shared release within two months.
