Charlotte Gainsbourg named Kanye West as the artist she listens to during a masterclass at the Busan International Film Festival on Oct. 8, 2026, according to Variety.

The answer landed quickly. Gainsbourg called West a “very controversial artist” and said she listens to everything he does.

She was speaking in Busan as a guest with Melancholia, the 2011 drama by Lars von Trier. The festival, which is scheduled for Oct. 6–15, 2026, billed her session as “Charlotte Gainsbourg: The Muse of French Chic,” a closer look at her acting career, according to BIFF. The festival site lists the Cine Class for Oct. 8 at 13:30.

Gainsbourg has made four films with von Trier, according to Variety. The first was Antichrist, for which she won best actress at Cannes. The others include Melancholia and the two parts of Nymphomaniac.

She said she had not seen Melancholia in 15 years. She also said she still exchanges text messages with von Trier.

She described the director as “very tortured” and “extremely vulnerable” during the session. She spoke about trust on his sets and the close working link that kept her returning for further films.

The music question has history. Gainsbourg covered West’s “Runaway,” a track that originally appeared on his album My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, according to Pitchfork. She performed the cover on the French television programme Taratata and later included it on an EP titled Take 2, according to Dazed.

Her latest screen work moves to French legal history. She plays lawyer and women’s rights campaigner Gisèle Halimi in L’Affaire Marie-Claire. The film played in the Special Screenings section at Cannes, a sidebar for notable new work outside the main competition, and opens in France on Nov. 4.

What makes this stand out is the mix. A career session built around von Trier turned into a wider note on what she watches and what she hears.
